What Constitutes A “Sad Person?”

I ask the question, “what constitutes a sad person?” You may think to yourself, “oh, they’re just having a bad day.” There’s more to it than that. Try, like having a bad life. Some people are predisposed, it’s in their genetic code. Still, others fall victim to the daily grind of stress. In sum, if it’s a massive amount of stress, you go into overload mode. You stop functioning in society. In sum, you stop existing (or you hope so). The feelings of anguish become so overpowering, for the most part, you just want to die. Nothing you do seems to bring you out of this black hole.
It’s so cold down there, that you shiver at the thought of it. I’m talking about depression. There are many aspects of depression that seem unfathomable. How do you get out once you fall in? How do you stay out once you get out? There are many names for depression (there is a few choice words I can think of). Here are some of the names (symbols) and someone famous who suffers from depression.

The code F43.23 is a diagnostic code used by healthcare professionals to indicate a specific diagnosis. In the ICD-10-CM, F43.23 represents an acute stress reaction, which is a psychological response to an overwhelming traumatic event that has occurred within the past few days. Symptoms of an acute stress reaction may include anxiety, dissociation, and re-experiencing of the traumatic event.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger in the brain that regulates several functions in the body, such as mood, appetite, and sleep. Low serotonin, also known as serotonin deficiency or serotonin depletion, can cause several negative effects on mental and physical health. Lack of serotonin may also cause sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or difficulty staying asleep. Serotonin is involved in regulating the sleep-wake cycle, and low levels can lead to alterations in this cycle.

INFJ is one of 16 personality types in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) system. It stands for Introverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, and Judging. While there is no such thing as ‘INFJ depression,’ individuals of this personality type may experience depression in ways that are specific to their personality traits and coping mechanisms.

INFJs are introspective and empathetic individuals who tend to absorb and process the emotions of others. As a result, INFJs may be particularly vulnerable to feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and despair when they encounter situations of emotional distress, either their own or someone else’s.

GDS depression stands for Geriatric Depression Scale, which is a screening tool used by healthcare professionals to identify and assess depression in older adults. The GDS was originally developed in 1986 as a self-administered questionnaire containing 30 yes/no questions, designed to identify symptoms of depression in older adults. It has since been adapted and revised in various forms, including a yes/no version, a short-form version with 15 questions, and a clinician-administered version. The GDS depression scale typically covers a range of symptoms and behaviors associated with depression, including:

  • Mood changes, such as sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness
  • Physical symptoms, such as fatigue, aches, and pains
  • Behavioral changes, such as difficulty sleeping or eating, and loss of interest in activities

SIG-E-CAPS is an acronym that is commonly used in the medical field to describe the symptoms associated with major depression. Each letter in the acronym represents a different set of symptoms:

S – Sleep disturbances (either insomnia or hypersomnia)
I – Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities (anhedonia)
G – Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
E – Loss of energy or fatigue
C – Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
A – Appetite or weight changes
P – Psychomotor agitation or retardation
S – Suicidal thoughts or ideation

“Nofap depression” is a term used to describe a temporary period of negative emotions or mood changes experienced by individuals who have committed to abstaining from pornography, masturbation, or other sexual activities. This phenomenon is typically associated with the NoFap movement, which is an online community that promotes the practice of abstaining from these activities as a means of self-improvement and personal growth.

Some individuals who engage in the NoFap challenge report feeling a sense of increased energy, focus, and motivation in the short term. However, others may experience an initial surge of negative emotions, such as anxiety, irritability, and depression, which is sometimes referred to as “NoFap depression.”

Jim Carrey is a famous actor and comedian who has spoken publicly about his struggles with depression and mental health. He has been open about his experiences with depression and how it has affected his life and career.

In interviews and public statements, Carrey has described his lifelong struggle with depression, including bouts of intense sadness, apathy, and loneliness. He has also spoken about how these feelings have impacted his personal relationships and his ability to connect with others.

Carrey has used his public platform to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues, advocating for greater access to mental health services and resources. He has also discussed the importance of finding purpose and meaning in life as a means of coping with depression.

Based on recent surveys and research studies, here are four states in the United States that have high rates of depression:

Utah: A 2019 study by Mental Health America ranked Utah as the state with the highest overall prevalence of mental illness, including depression.

Oregon: According to a 2019 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Oregon had the highest increase in depression diagnoses among states from 2014 to 2018.

West Virginia: A 2021 study by Blue Cross Blue Shield found that West Virginia had the highest percentage of its population with major depression episodes.

Rhode Island: A 2019 study by Mental Health America ranked Rhode Island as the state with the highest rate of adults with a major depressive episode in the past year.

Can you imagine living in any of these states and knowing that according to surveys and research, your state has the most depressed individuals. Makes you want to go live there, doesn’t it?

So the question is, how does a “sad person” get themselves out of that black hole. Of course, with help from others and your own soul searching.
As the so-called professionals would say, “surround yourself with happy people!” I wish it was that easy. Everyday is a constant struggle to keep your head above water, so you don’t drown, completely. Jim Carrey is a good example of staying afloat and he has done a lot to raise awareness for mental health. You can give depression all kinds of names and symbols, but in the end, it narrows down to the individual who suffers from depression to ultimately resurrect themselves from the pits of hell! They have to fight there way to the surface amongst despair. Geez, I never new I could be so dark! No, seriously, I’ve been there…I know!
